Construction projects both large and small are complex endeavors, involving many tasks, systems and often-disparate subcontractors. Proper front-end planning and scheduling is an essential tool to coordinate and assemble all necessary elements and tasks. This course covers both introductory and advance knowledge on construction scheduling. Introductory knowledge includes: 

  • How to create Work Break down Structure (WBS) 
  • How to create logical links between activities 
  • How to identify calculate critical project activities and the critical path of the schedule 
  • How to use project slack or float to balance resources expenditures 
  • Advanced knowledge includes:  Resource leveling and how to better allocate labor resources 
  • How to track labor cost by using manpower loading chart 
  • Simplified methods for tracking project schedule
  • Schedule compression and the impact of schedule compression 
  • How to identify scheduling missive


Dr. Awad Hanna is a professor and Chair of the Construction Engineering and Management Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Hanna holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Penn State University, and he is a registered professional engineer in the United States and Canada. Dr. Hanna has authored over 100 refereed journal articles on construction-related topics with a special emphasis on labor productivity, construction methods, cumulative impact of change, construction risk management and orders.
