Description

Designed for entry-level project managers, this course provides a practical introduction to HVAC and plumbing systems and their role in building construction. Participants will learn key terminology, identify common equipment and materials, understand how heating, cooling, ventilation, and water distribution systems work, and interpret mechanical plans and specifications. The course also covers the commissioning process and how these systems are integrated throughout a construction project.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and use basic terminology for both HVAC and plumbing systems
  2. Identify various HVAC equipment and systems, explaining their primary functions
  3. Describe fundamental methods for heating, cooling, and ventilating buildings
  4. Recognize and explain the basic components of air conditioning and water distribution systems
  5. Interpret HVAC plans and specifications used in construction projects
  6. Understand the importance of the commissioning process in mechanical system installation
  7. Identify common piping materials and components used in both HVAC and plumbing systems.

Brad Perkins, PE, is a professional engineer and Senior Lecturer in Iowa State University’s Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. A graduate of Iowa State’s Construction Engineering program, Brad brings industry experience as a design engineer along with nearly 20 years of experience educating future construction professionals. Brad is passionate about workforce development and preparing the next generation of construction leaders through education, mentorship, and industry engagement.
